About Us
WHO ARE WE?

We are team ORCA-207, consisting of four girls representing Wilderness school, to participate in the annual Year 9 SUBS in SCHOOLS competition that will be held at the Royal Adelaide Show in September 2023. This year’s competition is forthrightly held to explore the complex challenges of maritime engineering and hydrodynamics using coding and electronics to design and build an operational submarine or Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV).

Our team, ORCA 207, has a passion for maritime engineering, under water system design, coding and electronics, and will take part in this year SUBS in SCHOOLS competition. It is a part of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning activities that are applicable to careers, inspiring and motivating us girls to study and exploring STEM-related vocations and scholastic pathways.

In this competition, our team will design, build, test and refine an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) using a Submarine kit from the Re-Engineering Australia Foundation. The work of our team and the ROV will be represented and assessed at the State Championships, which will be held at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds. Where we will have a trade display in the STEM pavilion and present our ROV to a panel of judges from industry professionals in defence, engineering, and naval ship building.
INSPIRATION FROM OUR NAME

Our name ORCA-207 was inspired by one of the most powerful sea species, the Orca. When submarines were first designed, marine engineers and naval architects designed submarines to replicate animals like whales and orcas because of their fluent dynamic movement and the efficiency of their shape while moving through the ocean. We also chose the orca as it is one of the main protectors of the ocean, similarly to how submarines are used to protect the nation’s waters. They are fierce and protective creators, which align with our team’s values of passion and strength.

The ‘207’ in our name comes from the Kobben Class submarine, previously known as ‘Type 207’, commanded by Solveig Krey. Solveig Krey was Norweigan Navy officer, and the first woman in the world to ever command a submarine. As a team of young girls, we believe the lack of women in STEM can be greatly improved by the participation of females in Engineering and Mathematics, especially through this exciting hands-on SUBS in SCHOOLS competition.
TEAM COLOUR SYMBOLISM

Our team is represented by the main colour of red. Red symbolises the fierceness and competitiveness of our team’s values and an orca itself, as well as the passion and love we have for learning and commitment towards this project. We also implemented a use of the colour black to support the red, as it symbolises power and strength.
